Community Generosity Enhances Surgical Care at OSMH

Thanks to the generosity of donors, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has added a new reciprocating surgical saw to its operating room, providing surgeons with enhanced precision and helping improve patient outcomes.

A reciprocating surgical saw is a specialized instrument designed to make precise bone cuts during orthopaedic procedures. The new technology supports minimally invasive foot surgery techniques, allowing surgeons to perform complex bone cuts and deformity corrections through much smaller incisions than traditional surgical approaches. 

For patients, these smaller incisions can offer significant benefits, including shorter surgical times, lower risk of infection, reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery. The technology also enables surgeons to perform procedures with greater accuracy and control, helping to optimize surgical outcomes. 

“This equipment allows us to perform minimally invasive foot surgery using small burrs rather than the larger incisions previously required for certain procedures,” explained Dr. Jerry Xing.  

By reducing tissue disruption, patients often experience less pain and a quicker return to their normal activities.
