New Equipment is Enhancing Patient Care
While they may not be the most visible or high-profile pieces of equipment in the hospital, two donor-funded gynecology chairs are having an extraordinary impact on patient care at OSMH.
Designed mainly for gynecological examinations and procedures, these chairs are helping healthcare teams provide timely access to cervical cancer screening, biopsies, and treatment of abnormal cells.
The addition of two new chairs has significantly expanded clinic capacity, allowing more patients to be seen and helping reduce wait times for important diagnostic and treatment services. The equipment serves approximately 1,200 to 1,500 patients each year through gynecological clinics, providing critical screening and early intervention services for the community.
Earlier access to care means abnormalities can be identified and treated sooner, often preventing conditions from progressing and reducing the need for more invasive procedures.
“The impact has been tremendous,” shared Helmi Goodall, RPN, Team Lead Outpatient Clinics. “We’re able to see more patients, reduce wait times, and provide treatment earlier. That means we’re catching concerns before they become much more serious.”
The chairs’ versatility also allows them to be used for a variety of other outpatient procedures, including general surgery, plastic surgery, the Anesthetic Procedure Clinic and Ear, Nose and Throat, which helps support care for patients across multiple specialties.
The chairs integrate with donor-funded imaging technology that allows healthcare providers to view examinations in real time. Patients can choose to see their procedure on the monitor, helping them better understand their care and participate in conversations about their health. OSMH also uses this technology for education and training. The system allows learners and clinicians to identify abnormalities together, supporting both patient care and the development of future healthcare professionals.
Staff describe the surgical and gynecology chairs as some of the most important donor-funded investments ever received by the Outpatient Department.
“We are incredibly grateful,” said Helmi Goodall. “These chairs have allowed us to expand our services, improve the patient experience, and provide better care for our community.”
By helping to bring modern, versatile technology to OSMH, donors are improving access to care, supporting healthcare education, and ensuring patients can receive high-quality, timely treatment close to home.
