New Endoscopic Equipment Enhances Cancer Detection
We are proud to report that thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has acquired new state-of-the-art endoscopic equipment for the Surgical Department. This vital advancement is already making a difference for patients in detecting serious gastrointestinal conditions.
Endoscopy plays a crucial role in diagnosing issues within the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. This includes the esophagus, stomach, colon, and bowel. With this new equipment, our physicians can visualize these areas with greater clarity and precision, helping to identify ulcers, abnormal growths, and even early signs of cancer.
What sets this new technology apart is its advanced imaging capabilities. The new equipment includes Colour Imaging (LCI®) to enhance the visibility of non-cancerous tumours, and Blue Light Imaging that improves the characterization of abnormal or damaged tissues. These features allow our medical teams to detect abnormal tissue earlier, increasing the potential for earlier diagnosis and treatment of cancers.
Muriel Sowinski, Interim Program Manager, Perioperative & Perianesthesia Services, shared her excitement:
“The new endoscopy equipment directly enhances the quality of care we provide for our patients and empowers our endoscopy and surgical teams with the latest technology to deliver safer, more efficient procedures. Importantly, it strengthens our ability to detect and diagnose cancers earlier and more accurately, which can be lifesaving for many patients.”
This exciting advancement in equipment has been made possible by the support of our donor community. Your contributions are not just investments in equipment—they are investments in lives, in hope, and in the future of healthcare in our region.
On behalf of the entire Surgical Department and the patients they serve, we thank you. Your generosity is helping us elevate patient outcomes and advance our clinical capabilities in meaningful, life-changing ways.
