A Heartfelt Tribute: Rylee’s Lending Library at OSMH Paediatrics and NICU

In a touching tribute to their late daughter, Rylee, Jade and Ryan Dowling have initiated a lending library at the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) Paediatrics and NICU departments. This thoughtful project, funded by the Charlee’s Run bereavement fund, aims to bring a sense of normalcy and comfort to parents during challenging times.

Jade and Ryan Dowling, who have had three children born at OSMH and are expecting their fourth, were inspired to create the library after their own experiences with their daughter, Rylee. Born in March 2021, Rylee faced complications shortly after birth and was diagnosed with Otahara Syndrome, a rare form of infantile epilepsy. The Dowlings spent eight weeks with Rylee in the NICU and always brought a book to read to her.

Jade recalls, “My heart would ache for other families of babies who couldn’t be touched and had no form of contact physical or verbal.” This sentiment drove her to ask the hospital about the availability of books for parents to read to their children, ultimately leading to the creation of the lending library.

During their time with Rylee, Jade and Ryan found solace in reading to her, hoping to instill early literacy habits. However, they recognized the difficulties parents face in bringing books to the hospital, given the weight, or having to remember to pack them. The lending library addresses this need, providing a convenient resource for parents to connect with their children through reading.

Rylee’s journey was marked by love and care. Ryan and Jade returned to their home in Orillia with Rylee in May 2021. Due to the partnership between Sick Kids and OSMH, under the care of Dr. Michelle Gordon, OSMH Paediatrician, Rylee spent her remaining weeks at home surrounded by family, friends, and love. Rylee’s memory continues to inspire her parents. “After Rylee passed, I wanted to keep her memory alive,” said Jade. The lending library stands as a testament to this desire, offering a meaningful way for parents to engage with their children during hospital stays.

OSMH is deeply grateful to Jade and Ryan for identifying this need and creating an opportunity for parents and caregivers to connect with their children. It is especially meaningful to have had the Charlee’s Run village take part through their contributions. The lending library honors Rylee’s memory and provides a valuable resource for families navigating the challenges of having a sick child in the hospital.

The Dowling’s initiative is a beautiful example of turning personal grief into a source of comfort and support for others. Through the lending library, Rylee’s legacy will continue to touch the lives of many families, bringing a sense of normalcy and connection during difficult times.
